Here is yet another reminder that “reject modernity, embrace tradition” is 100% a white supremacist slogan and NOT an appropriate format for your fucking memes.
Me: Maybe we shouldn’t use slogans that were created by and for white supremacists to push white supremacist ideals.
This absolute chucklefuck who blocked me so I can’t even see his reply:
This phrase has NO MEANING outside of white supremacy. It’s not like Nordic runes, where it’s part of a culture and many religious practices. It was created BY and FOR white supremacists to combat what they see as modern degeneracy, which means multiethnic societies, interracial relationships, growing acceptance of non-cishet people, religious diversity, and other forms of diversity that doesn’t fit into what white supremacists see as a “pure” and “natural” state.
It is white supremacist to its very foundation. Nothing about it can be reclaimed because it never belonged to us. It can’t be redefined because its message is inherently bigoted. Using it for funny memes isn’t stealing it from white supremacists, it’s just normalizing one of their biggest talking points. People who only think of it as a meme aren’t going to get red flags when they hear it in the context of white supremacy.
And this is a big fucking deal because one of the biggest ways white supremacists are recruiting and radicalizing now is by infiltrating online spaces. Tumblr has a HUGE white supremacist problem especially and this slogan is big in nationalist and trad circles on tumblr, many of whom very specifically target young queer teens to radicalize.
